Hope! Terms of Service

Last updated: 16 September 2026

These terms govern your use of the Hope! app (package app.hope). By using Hope, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

1. The service

Hope helps you reach nearby phones that also have Hope open, over Bluetooth and the same local Wi-Fi. Optional email sign-in can sync your name and chats when internet is back. It is not a call to emergency services. It does not replace 112, 100, 101, 108, 911, or any official rescue number. Use every path to help that you have.

2. Who may use Hope

You must be at least 13 years old. You must be able to agree to these terms. You are responsible for this phone, the radios you turn on, and the messages you send.

3. Account

You may skip email and still use nearby SOS. If you enter an email, Hope sends a one-time code so we know that address can receive mail. Keep that code to yourself.

You can change your display name in Profile. The signed-in email cannot be changed in the app. Log out to leave this phone. Delete account to erase the cloud copy as well.

How to delete your account: Settings → Delete account. That removes your name, chats, and Nearby history from this phone and from Hope. It cannot be undone. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

4. SOS, chats, and location

5. Radios and battery

Radios stay on while Hope is open or minimized so a neighbor can still find you. Locking or closing Hope can stop that. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and location use battery. You choose whether those radios stay on.

Hope does not run a background location tracker. A live SOS notice may stay up while you are broadcasting so you can stop it.

6. No official dispatch

Hope does not notify police, fire, ambulance, or any government system by itself. A message arrives only if another Hope phone is in range (or a later hop is in range) and the app can use Bluetooth or the same Wi-Fi. Networks fail. A message may not arrive. Keep trying.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

We may refuse service, delete an account, or block abuse if we learn of it.

8. Intellectual property

Hope!, the Hope name, and the app’s design belong to the developer. You keep the content of messages you write. You grant us a limited right to store and relay that content only as needed to run the mesh and, if you enable Auto-sync, the optional cloud backup.

9. Third-party services

Sign-in codes are sent with OhTeaPea. Optional profile and chat sync uses Supabase. Location on Android may use Google Play services. Those providers have their own terms. Hope is not responsible for outages on those services.

10. Disclaimer

Hope is offered as-is, for emergency and community use, without warranties of any kind. We do not promise that a nearby phone will be there, that a sealed chat cannot be broken, or that cloud sync will always restore every message. You use Hope at your own risk.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost messages, failed SOS hops, location error, radio failure, or any injury or damage that arises from using or being unable to use Hope. If a court finds that this limit does not apply, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us for the app (which is currently nothing).

12. Privacy

The Privacy Policy explains what the app uses, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, location, email, device identifiers, notifications, and cloud sync, and how to delete your account.

13. Changes

We may update these terms. The “Last updated” date will change. If you keep using Hope after an update, the new terms apply.
