Hope! Privacy Policy

Hope keeps as little as we can. This policy explains what the Hope! app uses, who can see it, and how you can delete your account.

1. Who we are

Hope! (“Hope”, “the app”, “we”) is an emergency mesh communicator for Android. App name: Hope!. Package name: app.hope. Version covered: 1.0.0.

2. What Hope does

Hope sends SOS alerts and messages to nearby phones that also run Hope, over Bluetooth and the same local Wi-Fi, without pairing. It is meant to work when there is no internet or cell service. Optional email sign-in can save your name and chats when connectivity returns.

Hope is not a substitute for calling emergency services. Use every path to help that you have.

3. Information we collect and use

Hope uses the following categories of data. We do not collect more than the app needs to run.

3.1 Account and profile

• Display name you enter.
• Email address, if you choose to sign in.
• A Hope user id created for your profile.
• Preferences: auto-sync, private-chat notifications, nearby-SOS notifications.

You can use nearby emergency messaging without email. If you skip sign-in, your name stays on this phone so nearby Hope phones can see who sent an SOS.

3.2 Messages and SOS

• Broadcast SOS text you send. Nearby phones that have Hope open can read it. That is how a public alert hops.
• Private chat text. Hope seals it for the other phone. Nearby phones can pass it along, but they cannot open it.
• Who a message is from and when it was sent.
• Whether an SOS is still live, paused, delivered, or handed off.

Messages you send live on your phone. If Auto-sync is on and the internet is back, chats can also be saved to Hope’s cloud so they can be restored later.

3.3 Location

Location is shared only when you turn it on for that message, or when you open a shared location pin to walk toward it. Hope does not keep a live track of you. Location is not used to receive or hop messages, and is not used in the background.

When you attach a pin, Hope reads this phone’s latitude and longitude (precise location) and may send that pin with the SOS. The shared-location guide uses GPS plus the compass / motion sensors on this phone so the needle can point toward the saved pin. Those sensor readings stay on the phone.

3.4 Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi

Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi are used to find nearby Hope phones. That is how a message hops when there is no signal.

• Bluetooth scan, connect, and advertise. Pairing is not required. Scan is not used to derive your location.
• A short Bluetooth name that starts with “Hope” so nearby phones can recognize this radio.
• Nearby Wi-Fi / local network access to send and receive packets on the same Wi-Fi, including multicast. This is not used to derive your location.
• Whether Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobile data, and internet are on, so the app can show radio status.

3.5 Device information

• A local device identifier (Android ID on Android, or a vendor identifier on iOS) so this radio can be told apart from other Hope phones.
• A device name (for example the phone’s model or user-visible name) used to label this radio.

This identifier is for the mesh. It is not an advertising ID. Hope does not use it for ads or analytics.

3.6 Notifications

If you allow notifications, Hope can show:

• Private chat alerts (on by default).
• Nearby SOS alerts (off by default until you turn them on).
• A live SOS notice while you are broadcasting, so you can stop it.

You can turn these off in Settings. Notification permission is requested on the phone; Hope does not send marketing push from a cloud campaign.

3.7 Data stored only on this phone

• Name, email, sign-in step, and settings in on-device preferences.
• Inbox, chats, unread nearby alerts, and SOS hold state in a local Hope database on this phone.
• Keys used to seal and open private chats. Those keys stay on the phone.

4. Services and processors we use

Hope does not include advertising SDKs or third-party analytics SDKs. When internet is available, the app may contact:

• OhTeaPea (send.ohteapea.com) — to email a one-time sign-in code to the address you enter. Sign-in codes do not go through Supabase mail.
• Supabase — to save your name, email, user id, and synced chats when you sign in and Auto-sync is on, and to delete that cloud copy when you delete your account.
• Google Play services / device location APIs — to read GPS when you choose to share or follow a location pin on Android.
• Your email provider — receives the one-time sign-in message OhTeaPea sends.

Nearby Hope users are not “processors.” A broadcast SOS is meant to be read by people nearby who also have Hope open.

5. Permissions the app may ask for

• Internet and network state — sign-in codes, optional cloud sync, and radio status.
• Bluetooth (scan, connect, advertise) — mesh SOS and chats.
• Nearby Wi-Fi devices / local network / Wi-Fi multicast — mesh on the same Wi-Fi.
• Precise and approximate location (while using the app) — optional SOS pin and the walk-to-pin guide.
• Notifications — chat and SOS alerts.
• Compass / motion — point the shared-location guide.

You can refuse location or notifications. Mesh SOS can still send without a pin. The OS may still require some Bluetooth or nearby-device permission for the radios to work.

6. How we use this information

• Deliver SOS and chats across nearby Hope phones.
• Show who sent an SOS.
• Optional cloud backup of profile and chats when Auto-sync is on.
• Send a sign-in code to your email.
• Guide you toward a shared pin you chose to open.
• Keep a live SOS visible on this phone until you stop it.

Hope does not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not rent it.

7. Who can see a message

• Broadcast SOS — any nearby phone with Hope open may read it, show your name, and (if you attached one) your pin. They may hop it to the next phone.
• Private chat — sealed for the other person. Relays can carry the sealed packet and should not be able to read it.
• Cloud copy — only if you signed in and Auto-sync is on. Then Hope’s cloud holds the synced profile and chats so they can be restored.

8. Retention

Data on this phone stays until you log out, uninstall Hope, or delete your account. Cloud profile and synced chats stay until you delete your account or we remove them at your request.

A broadcast SOS that already reached another phone may remain on that phone until that person clears it. We cannot erase a copy that already hopped to someone else’s device.

9. Delete account

You can delete your account in the app:

Settings → Delete account

This removes your name, chats, and Nearby history from this phone and from Hope’s cloud. It cannot be undone. After deletion you will need to create a new profile if you use Hope again.

If you cannot open the app, email youtubemalaya@gmail.com from the address on the account and ask us to delete it. We will delete the cloud profile and synced chats tied to that email or user id.

Log out only removes your name, chats, and Nearby history from this phone. It does not delete the cloud account. Use Delete account if you want Hope to erase the cloud copy too.

10. Your choices

• Skip email and still use nearby SOS.
• Turn Auto-sync off so name, email, and chats are not saved to the cloud when internet is back.
• Decline location. SOS still sends without a pin.
• Turn private-chat or nearby-SOS notifications off.
• Log out of this phone, or delete the account.
• Revoke permissions in Android settings. Hope cannot pull back an OS grant by itself.

11. Children

Hope is not directed at children under 13. Do not create an account if you are under 13.

12. Security

Private chats are sealed with per-phone keys so a relay should not be able to read them. Cloud requests use HTTPS. No method of sending data is perfectly secure. Broadcast SOS is readable by nearby Hope phones by design. Do not put secrets in a broadcast SOS.

13. International processing

OhTeaPea and Supabase may process data on servers outside your country. If you sign in or sync, that data may leave the country where you are using the app.

14. Changes

We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date at the top will change. Continued use after an update means the new policy applies.
